Light Sphere III - a kinetic light sculpture
By Tom Wilkinson (he/they) and Electronic engineering by Adrian Godwin
Light Sphere is spinning circle of LEDs creating volume of space. The artwork is forever evolving (still trying to get it right) - it’s previous incarnations had pinpoints of light creating longitudinal lines, and a heater in the control box, because in Vilnius at -3 degrees, the light sequence gave up. Sphere III has now super=fast LED strips, so it’s going to be hard not the new to get too gaudy. The 2 metre diameter circle rotates at varying speeds, slowing to the speed of a radar screen, and then building up to high speed. ( it’s been in a few festivals and the public sensibly do keep their distance). Inept at coding., although I know what I want to see, so I will be trying AI, However, if anyone would like to come and have a code, please message me tom@tomwilkinson.com As an artist, I'm captivated by the spherical form. It's just got to be the purist shape - that matter wants to be, when unrestrained. Light Sphere has been in four light festivals - including Winter Lights Canary Wharf. The most recent was the aforementioned Vilnius, Lithuania in 2023.
